The project site lies at the heart of a natural stone amphitheater—a former mining area perched atop the mountains surrounding the municipality of Dossena. The earliest settlements in the area date back to the Bronze Age, when deposits of iron, calamine, and galena were first discovered. These resources gave rise to a stable community near the mining sites, making Dossena the earliest inhabited settlement in the valley.
The monument ECHO OF THE MOUNTAIN honors the memory of all those who once labored in Dossena’s now-abandoned mines. The project features a circular enclosure inspired by traditional wooden fences, embracing a large stone sculpture by artist Francesco Paterlini. This setting isolates the stone from its surroundings, imbuing it with a contemplative and symbolic presence. The enclosure consists of a concrete base that extends halfway around the circle to form a long bench for community gatherings. A charred, pyramid-shaped wooden structure is set atop the concrete, running continuously along its entire length.
